What is psoriasis?

There are several types of psoriasis. The most common form, called plaque psoriasis, appears on the surface of the skin as raised, red scaly patches covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells. Psoriasis can occur on any part of the body although common areas include elbows, knees and the scalp.  The rash can become irritated due to scratching associated with an itching sensation.  According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, a little more than 30% of psoriasis sufferers have a family member who also suffered with psoriasis.  It is important to have a skin rash diagnosed by your physician.
